From a Laboratory of Wondermaterials to Ballads of Brutalism, from Utopian roller coasters for transient communities to installative impro-performances inspired by South-American mythology – when looking at the work of the students presenting their work at the DAAD Art Show 2013, one is confronted with such a diversity of projects that is difficult to pin them down to a common topic. However, when there is to be one common denominator for the work of these artists, designers, architects and musicians it is their radical experimental approach towards and beyond their own discipline.
London’s art schools are renowned internationally for being research driven experimental institutions and catalysts of speculation: relieved from the pragmatic constraints of professional life, students can ask the question “what if” and as such have the chance to produce something genuinely novel. For that reason, these schools exercise an irresistible attraction upon students from around the globe. At the same time, exorbitant living costs and ever rising study fees continue to be massive obstacles for making the leap to England. And even once this leap is made, anxiety about the own economy threatens to overshadow the intellectual and artistic freedom enjoyed at the schools.
The exhibition has been initiated and generously supported by the DAAD London.

New Mentor: Andrew Edward McIntyre
Andrew is highly experienced registered Architect who has worked at every architectural stage, across a very broad range of sectors. Specialising in the traditional full spectrum practice of architecture he has worked on over sixteen completed projects, running a large proportion of them on site and taking almost half of them from inception to completion as Project Architect. Andrew possesses a high level of technical, management and job running experience, complemented by highly developed design skills and natural creativity.
Having graduated from Manchester School of Architecture with a BA (Hons), and attending the Centre for Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University gaining his DipArch, Andrew embarked on his architectural career in the early 2000’s. Working initially at Wm SaundersLLP in Leeds, he gained an excellent experience in the real world practice of architecture taking projects from inception to completion and running highly complex projects on site. It was here that he also gained his RIBAPart III – Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice through the RIBANorthwest. Andrew then went on to help establish the Harrogate studio of the newly formed design consultancy Seven Architecture, and over the next two years had the opportunity to work with them to deliver a range of exceptional projects.
Andrew relocated to London in 2009 to start a new adventure, one which has involved forays into the worlds of architectural lighting, website development, fashion, and creating the foundations for a global design department. This eclectic journey combined with disenfranchisement from the architectural establishment, has ultimately lead Andrew to establishthe UAC to bring together Architects affected by these unprecedented and challenging times. He is now taking this group forward to explore new opportunities and projects and help people to remain in the industry.
Andrew’s built work ranges from the A&E Department at Leeds General Infirmary to Rochdale Sixth Form College, all the way to a helter skelter inspired tower at Redcar seafront.
New Residency: The Unemployed Architects Community
The Unemployed Architects Community provides a space for unemployed Architects to share our experience, knowledge, and resources, and find ways to help each other and ourselves. In view of the length and depth of the current economic crisis, it is critical that we develop radical new ways of working together, in order to minimise the long term impact on both the industry and individuals. The UAC are currently undertaking exciting project work involving groups of everyday people and recent graduates giving the opportunity to engage with real world architectural issues and develop their skills for industry. Through the vehicle of a counter concept proposal responding to a significant urban development currently in planning, we are taking the opportunity to explore the use of technology to create new networks and allow a wider audience to connect and contribute to the architectural process.
